The furniture manufacturer Hugener AG from Stein AR specialises in the production of solid wood furniture. Their designs are rather massive and heavy in appearance. To bring a breeze of fresh air into their range, we were commissioned to design a desk. A desk that makes solid wood look light and yet guarantees absolute stability. Different approaches were sketched, discussed with the furniture manufacturer and the favourite was defined. A raised frame around the work surface ensures that paper and pen remain in place. The underframe of the secretary is a fine reinterpretation of the traditional wooden blocks. We presented different tabletop versions, each with its own advantages depending on the user’s needs. The furniture manufacturer decided to realise the desk in four different versions in elm and walnut.
